With 178 teams and nearly 1,000 insurance professionals participating, IICF’s inaugural International Step Up Challenge offered an industrywide, 6-week friendly exercise competition as a safe and fun opportunity to promote wellbeing with virtual teambuilding, while raising vital funds for nonprofit partners in the United States and United Kingdom serving children at risk.
Proceeds from the IICF International Step Up Challenge benefitted the COVID-19 Crisis: IICF Children's Relief Fund, which provides funding to organizations championing children at risk of food insecurity, educational disruption, family homelessness and other circumstances exacerbated by the pandemic. You can view our list of nonprofit partners supported by the Children's Relief Fund here.
Winners of the Step Up Challenge in the US and UK had the privilege of designating a grant to the charities of their choice, further giving back to those in need in our local communities.
Hear about the impact these funds will make in the community from 2020 IICF Step Up Challenge Charities of Choice: Brazoria Heritage Foundation, Crawley Open House, Children’s Health Fund, North Texas Food Bank and Samaritans.

Meet the 2020 IICF International Step Up Challenge Winners!
Phoebe Measells is the Marketing Manager at South Texas Agents Alliance, a master agency of SIAA and is member of the IICF Houston Associate Board. She has used the pandemic as an opportunity to explore her many passions such as crafting and painting, biking, running, cooking and more! Phoebe set a goal for herself of gaining at least 40,000 steps a day during the challenge and was able to complete this personal goal by committing to morning, afternoon and evening walks as well as 1.5 hours of activity each day. Her favorite part about the challenge is that it gave her the ability to work towards a goal all while making an impact in her local community. Phoebe has chosen the Brazoria Heritage Foundation as her charity of choice.
Balvinder Ahluwalia is a Senior Claims Advisor at Gard located in the United Kingdom. She achieved success by committing herself to two challenges that overlapped each other, the IICF International Step Up Challenge and the Samarathon 2020. Both challenges were philanthropic, which gave her the opportunity to push herself out of her comfort zone while doing good for others. Balvinder walked twice a day, a 10K each morning and then an afternoon walk with her son. Balvinder's favorite part about the challenge was that participants could also track additional activities outside of steps and the ability to check progress on the leaderboard. Balvinder has chosen The Samaritans and Crawley Open House as her charities of choice.
Bobby Steinsdoerfer is the Senior Vice President - P&C Regional Leader at QBE North America and is a member of the IICF Northeast Associate Board. He achieved success by dedicating his free-time to an array of physical activities. He was an avid bike rider with his longest route being 35 miles around the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway! During the pandemic, he used the opportunity of being home to explore the city with his children by taking walks through Central Park and across the Brooklyn Bridge. His favorite part of the IICF International Step Up Challenge was the opportunity to see the insurance industry dedicate its time and money to help support children during this difficult time. Bobby has chosen Children's Health Fund as his charity of choice.

Team #MKLStrides is a group of individuals who work for Markel Specialty out of Plano, Texas. Their team was able to achieve success by participating in many different activities such as hiking, biking and swimming. A large help was that many had the ability to take a social-distanced hiking trip during the challenge racking up an impressive amount of steps as well as provided a much-needed change of scenery! Their team's favorite part of the IICF International Step Up Challenge was the opportunity to motivate and keep each other accountable as well as the ability to see the leaderboard and pacer rabbit for those days that needed an extra push. Team #MKLStrides has chosen the North Texas Food Bank as its charity of choice.
